Barn Owls
Barn Owls is a mixed gender class with 6 pupils who all have Autistic Spectrum Condition. The children in Barn Owls range from Year 3 to 6 and have severe communication differences.
In Barn Owls, we place a strong emphasis on fostering independence, forming relationships, communication, and self-regulation. We use a total communication approach, which involves finding the right combination of communication methods to meet each child's unique needs. This ensures that children with communication challenges can express themselves in ways that are most accessible to them. Our aim is to instill a love of learning in every child. We incorporate the children’s individual interests into our planning, ensuring they are engaged and motivated in the most effective way possible. With a joyful and supportive environment, we are dedicated to helping each child reach their full potential and prepare for adulthood. We offer a creative, hands-on, and engaging approach to learning, designed to enhance attention and involvement. Our foundation curriculum incorporates the Attention Autism intervention, while our English lessons include sensory stories, fine motor activities, and colourful semantics. Each child follows our Romans Field Curriculum, tailored to their individual learning goals. We offer a range of interventions such as TACPAC, speech and language, fine motor and intensive interaction.

Autumn Term 2 Summary
Barn Owls have had a fantastic half term filled with engaging and creative activities!
In Writing, we’ve been exploring the story of The Rainbow Fish, immersing ourselves in its colourful world. We’ve acted out key scenes, participated in a sensory storytelling experience and created our own versions of the Rainbow Fish using a variety of materials. A particular highlight was making the octopus from the story, where Barn Owls threaded pipe cleaners onto its body to form the tentacles — such a fun, hands-on way to bring the story to life!
In Humanities, our focus has been on Christmas which has been taught through Attention Autism and hands-on tuff tray activities. We have crafted stockings, snowmen, gingerbread men, and Christmas trees, bringing festive cheer to our classroom. Barn Owls particularly enjoyed visiting the immersion room, where they took part in a variety of Christmas-themed activities, including brushing reindeer and decorating Christmas trees.
In Exploring Media, we have worked on both our music and art targets. In Music, Barn Owls enjoyed experimenting with a wide range of instruments in the music room, including the Piano, Drums, Saxophone, and Guitar. Each child took turns to create their own unique sounds! In Art, we have been inspired by the artist LS Lowry, and the children have created beautiful artwork reflecting his distinctive style.
It’s been an inspiring and action-packed half term for the Barn Owls, and we can’t wait to see what the next one brings!
